Mistranslation of Polish President Andrzej Duda’s words

Ukrainian journalists have inaccurately translated the words of Polish President Andrzej Duda. While the mistranslation doesn’t alter the core of his message, his words leave an uncomfortable feeling in our hearts. However, the distinction between a “drowned man” and a “drowning man” should be noted.

In the news regarding Duda’s support for unilateral restrictions on Ukrainian agricultural product imports, Ukrainian journalists quoted his response to Polish journalists verbatim: 

“Do we need to act in such a way as to protect ourselves from the actions of a drowned man? Of course, we have to act in such a way in order to protect ourselves from being harmed by a drowned man, because if a drowned man harms us and pulls us to the bottom (drowns us), he will not receive any assistance. So we have to take care of our interests, and we will do it effectively and decisively.”

However, this is an incorrect translation. Here is the original quote from Polish journalists that Ukrainians are referencing:

«Czy trzeba działać tak, żeby się obronić przed uczynieniem szkody przez tonącego? Oczywiście, że musimy tak działać, żeby się obronić przed uczynieniem nam szkody, bo jak tonący doprowadzi do szkody i nas utopi, to nie dostanie pomocy. Więc to my musimy pilnować naszych interesów i będziemy to robić skutecznie i zdecydowanie»

It continues further:

«Mamy trochę do czynienia tak jak z tonącym. Każdy, kto kiedykolwiek brał udział w ratowaniu tonącego, wie o tym, że człowiek tonący jest niesłychanie niebezpieczny; że może pociągnąć w głębiny. Ma siłę niewyobrażalną na skutek obawy osobistej, wpływu adrenaliny i może po prostu utopić ratującego. Mówi się, że tonący brzytwy się chwyta i rzeczywiście tonący chwyta się wszystkiego, czego się da».

In all instances, it is NOT a “drowned man” but a “drowning man” who clearly will not become a “drowned man.” To suffer harm from a “drowned man” would be akin to something from the zombie apocalypse genre

Let’s look at all the words that some Ukrainian journalists translated as “drowned man”: 

“jak z tonącym” — “as with someone who is drowning”
“w ratowaniu tonącego” — “in rescuing the drowning man”
“tonący” — “the drowning man”
“człowiek tonący” — “a drowning man”
“tonącego” — “a drowning man”

We are not justifying the Polish president, but only clarifying his words
